Important Lessons I Learnt from Dropping my 8-5pm Job to Work on My Own
There is nothing as good as being your own boss and being able to work at your own pace. It gives you freedom and flexibility. I know thinking about these and many more benefits of working on your own make you so excited that you just want to immediately ditch your 9-5 and start your own work.
But before you do this, I advise that you thoroughly read and learn from the lessons that I share below. It will really provide you the needed insights that will help you when you ditch your 5-9 to work on your own.
Networking is Important
This was my first lesson I learnt from ditching my 9-5 to work for myself. No man is an island; you need the help and support of other people to build any viable business. Your network is your net worth as it is popularly said. And you cannot get the support and help of people that you do not know.
This is why you need to connect and corroborate with people in your field and learn from them, and leverage on them. Through their referrals, you can get clients. You also need their encouragement because; the journey is not a smooth sail. There are days that you will reach a rock bottom and will need somebody to lift you up.
So, learn the act of networking; go for conferences, seminars, event centres and boot camps organized by expert in your niche, you will meet people of like minds, relate with them and make friends with them.
Read the social media posts of others in your niche, comment on their posts, like and share them. Doing this will make them notice you, and in turn, they can return the favour. From there, you guys can strike a chord. Also, you need to get a mentor who will guide you and make your work easier.
Sustaining Relationship is Important
It is not enough to know how to network and connect with people. It is not enough to know how to easily pitch prospects and get customers. While this is necessary, the important thing is that you must know how to sustain these relationships.
You must show concern and empathy to people you are in relationship with. You shouldn’t just
develop relationships for selfish reasons or ulterior motives. If people discover that you don’t really care about them, they can draw back from you and this will be detrimental to your business in the long run.
It will not always Work out as you’ve Planned
I’m sure that before you ditched your 5-9 to work on your own, you would have drafted a clear plan on what you want to achieve and how to go about it. The truth is that it will not always work out as you’ve planned.
Some of your plans will fail and you have a choice to both learn from it and grow by it or you allow it to discourage you such that you lose your passion or even give up altogether. You must learn to develop positive mindedness and optimism that will keep you going when things do not work out as planned.

Another valuable lesson I learnt from ditching my 9-5 work to work for myself was to learn how to outsource. When you are just starting out, it is easy to get every of your work done by yourself. This is because your customer base is still small, so you have the time to get all your work done by yourself.

Also, blogging is one of the ways that you can give value to your audience and in return you gain their trust, loyalty and patronage.
You Become More Creative and Innovative
By ditching your 5-9 to work on your own, you have become your own boss. And the whole responsibility of your business lies on you. You will now be the one to be doing all the thinking that your boss at your 9-5 work does for you.
This forces you to be more creative and innovative because you will need to be coming up with initiative to take your business to the next level. You will need to improvise with the limited resources available at your disposal. Doing this will force you think outside the box and get your creative juices flowing
