Web 2.0 Marketing: HubPages, Squidoo Lenses and DevHub
In Orbit 2, we move out to Web 2.0, which, according to Wikipedia is:
"Web 2.0 refers to a perceived second generation of web development and design, that facilitates communication, secure information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web.
Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services, and applications such as social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies."
Web 2.0 sites are important to us because they:
are liked by search engines - they are indexed quickly, providing your marketing with a kick-start, and they often achieve high PageRank
they are a crucial component in our link network, enabling us to create a link ring of quality content on different IPs
they allow us to create content remarkably quickly, often providing ready-made modules that can be dropped into our pages
they can generate revenue for us in their own right
they are free!
Marketing with Hubpages
First, what's a hub:
"Hubs are just like web pages. Each one contains an article you write that's filled with insight, advice, information - whatever you'd like to say on your favorite topic."
To create a hub, sign-up for your free account at HubPages. When you receive your confirmation email, you will need to click on the verification link. Included in this email is the HubPages Guide.
HubPages rank highly because they have a strict policy on anything remotely suggesting SPAM. So keep these tips in mind:
when you create your hubs, be very conservative in links to your other sites (absolute maximum of 2) and tags (3 at most)
avoid any kind of duplicate content (even if it belongs to you)
don't have teasers with "read more at my website" links
mix your links - don't always link to your main website, link to your lenses or YouTube videos or blogs or .... (This is part of our overall approach, see more on the How to Get Backlinks page)
HubPagesOn creating your hub you will need to give it a title and a URL - keywords time again! On the same page you will add tags. The next stage is to add some Content Capsules. These are types of content, including:
RSS feeds - eg from your blog
revenue - Amazon and Ebay
Once you have created your first Hub, you should update your Profile by clicking the My Profile tab. Consider adding a photo (builds trust) as well as biographical details.
Clicking Publish Now will publish your hub and allow you to enter your AdSense account details if you wish to earn a little extra cash.
(Another) Important Note About Quality
HubPages links are "nofollow" unless your profile score is higher than 75. Once you reach 75 they become "dofollow". This is to stop people using HubPages simply to get backlinks (as if ...)! However, it is not too difficult to attain a 75 rating if you follow the guidelines above and:
create a full profile, including photo
make comments and rate hubs - don't just say they are all great!
add other hubbers as friends
participate in the forum - and in Answers, see below
In other words - be a member as well as a creator.
There is also an Answers section in HubPages where you can ask other Hubbers to answer questions. Only 1 short answer (which can include relevant links) is permitted. Answers are voted on by HubPagers. Another useful source of backlinks!
Marketing with Squidoo Lenses
Squidoo MarketingTo quote from the website: "Squidoo is the popular publishing platform and community that makes it easy for you to create "lenses" online. Lenses are pages, kind of like flyers or signposts or overview articles, that gather everything you know about your topic of interest--and snap it all into focus."
What makes Squidoo so powerful is modules. Modules are building blocks that makes it easy to add links, images, content and functionality. Some of the modules need to be configured manually whilst others will automatically grab content (eg from RSS feeds) and ensure that you have a constantly updated lens. You can create as many lenses as you wish.
"the place to find complementry utilities and tools for your Lenses on Squidoo. Here you can see all of your lenses and groups, with shortcuts to some of the most vital functions not included on your usual dashboard.
If you are an Amazon Associate, then there are some exciting tools here that will spice up your lenses, and earn you more money from them."
There is also a Squidutils toolbar for Firefox and IE.A number of modules allow you to generate income. The royalties are shared with Squidoo. You receive 50%.
Important points about Squidoo:
ensure that you create a comprehensive profile with a keyworded link to your main website
use your keywords in page names, titles, links and copy
be a community member - comment on other lenses and join groups - this way you will gain traffic to your lens
learn to use Squidutils
ping your RSS feeds
link to and from your lens
bookmark your lens on social bookmark sites and link to your Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIN, MySpace accounts
ask for feedback
use Google Analytics
Be a Member!
Exactly as I said above in relation to HubPages - participate; a few highly ranked lenses are much more valuable than hundreds of poor ones.
The best place to learn about Squidoo is at SquidU (I assume that the 'U' stands for University) and in particular at the Squidoo Answerdeck. There are also a couple of excellent free 'How-To' e-books: the Official Squidoo How-To and the Official Recipe Guide
Making Money with Squidoo
If you would like to make some money with Squidoo, there is an excellent e-book called Squidoo Affiliate Destruction.
Clicking the link will take you to the usual extended sales page but the hype aside, this e-book has some very good ideas and if focused purely on making money.
Marketing with Weebly
WeeblyWeebly is a browser-driven website creation tool. It is very simple to use and doesn't have the range of options of the other Web 2.0 sites. However provide an ecommerce module and the option of creating a blog very easily. A great advantage of Weebly is that it has a PageRank of 7 - perfect for our Orbit 2 sites. SEO tools are built-in.
Weebly has both a free and a monthly subscription offering (the 6-month paid for option would be essentially free if you wished to use Google AdWords.)
Marketing with DevHub
DevHub is similar but different! It is a completely free, all-in-one service providing drag-and-drop development of websites. It's great strengths are:
it focuses on 'monetizable websites'
aggregation and distribution system - APIs to bring in content and enable revenue generation
quality assessed - you can have 10 free sites, but the next block of 10 depend on you having created quality in the first 10. This should mean that DevHub doesn't get too spammed
Don't forget the RSS
Don't forget to ping the RSS feeds of your Web 2.0 sites.
An Automated Blog can save you lots of time. It can generate backlinks for you and you can even make some money from it.
