Forget all those sites offering to submit your pages to tens of search engines. Firstly, only the big four matter, such is their dominance, and secondly, you will need to verify that you own the site that you are submitting, as the Google message on the right indicates.
Google Webmaster ToolsIf you haven’t done so already, create a Google account. This provides you with access to all Google Services, including the one that we are interested in: Webmaster Tools. Once you have logged in, you can add your site and then access Sitemaps in the Site Configuration Menu on the left.
Add the URL of your sitemap and you will get your verification instructions. Once your site has been verified, you will have access to all the WebMaster Tools. As you can see from the image on the left, there is lots of very useful information and you will be alerted to any problems Google encounters whilst trying to index your site.
You should also sign up for Google Analytics at this stage. This will provide you with incredibly detailed statistics about your site visitors – their geographic location, search terms they used, how long they stayed on your site, hair color. All you have to do is cut and paste some code into your webpages. Here is a short presentation on the benefits and features of Google Analytics.
Yahoo StatusSimilar process to Google. Go to the Yahoo Submission page, add your URL and you will then be prompted either to login or create a Yahoo account. Once you are logged-in, you will see your site listed and a status indicator on the right. Click on the circle and you will be taken to the verification options – insert a metatag or upload a small file.
Microsoft Bing VerificationGuess what – same procedure for Microsoft. Create a Live account and this will then provide you with access to Microsoft’s Bing Webmaster Center. (Bing is the new search service from Microsoft.) Again you will need to verify by uploading a file or inserting a metatag. Click on the image for a larger view.
